so i rarely post on tumblr but i really wanted to address this topic of not being a ‘true’ leafs fan if you only followed them now that they are in the playoffs.

i guess that makes sense, but should those sudden fans be discriminated? probably not. i’m sure the leafs don’t mind the extra support they gained for getting into playoffs. i think that’s great for them for surprising and making everyone proud.

let’s take my robotics team for example. 1241, THEORY6 of Rick Hansen Secondary School has always been an underdog in the FIRST robotics competition (FRC). this year, we built the best robot we’ve ever had and took it on to the Einstein field at world championships. how it works at the championships is that 400 teams are divided into the Archimedes, Galileo, Curie, and Newton divisions. then the winner of those divisions compete on Einstein field for world championship title. we took more and more people by surprise as we won the Galileo division, followed by moving onto Einstein, then actually winning world championships. there were 20 000 people in the stands and i think i can say that the majority of the crowd was cheering for our alliance. many of these teams probably never even heard of 1241 before. a fraction of these teams were from canada. most of those teams were probably underdogs, like us, as well. did we appreciate the support from those who didn’t support us before? of course! did we discriminate those who didn’t follow us for the whole season or from years in the past? no! wouldn’t you want the whole stadium cheering for your team? i would hope you do. by accomplishing the huge task of winning world championships, that just made our alliance more well known around the world. now we just look better to others and people are more appreciative of us. this should be the same for the leafs. why wouldn’t you want the leafs to be more appreciated?

i guess people want to be unique or want to take credit for supporting the leafs throughout the whole season. i stopped following nhl for the past few years, but i know that i wouldn’t appreciate being called a ‘fake-fan’ or ‘band-wagoner’.

i think a ‘true’ leafs fan should be spreading leaf love too and not try to hog it for themselves. the more the merrier!
